Protocol for the operation of the beaches according to the new data created by the pandemic from Corona virus Covid-19

With a sense of responsibility for the difficult conditions prevailing worldwide, due to the pandemic of the corona virus Covid-19 and bearing in mind the situation that citizens and visitors are expected to face this year's special summer season, we wrote a series of measures for the operation of public and privately managed by hotel units, beaches.

The purpose of these measures is to protect public health and to adapt to the terms and conditions set by the State and international organizations for the protection against the spread of corona virus Covid-19.

The guidelines of this protocol are not based on human exclusion, but on the creation of the bases for the reconstruction of the sense of security and trust, hoping that our beaches and public life, in general, will soon return to conditions of absolute normality.

For privately managed organized beaches by hotel units, some of the overall suggestions are indicated:

  • It is recommended that the distance between each “permanent” mounted umbrella set and pair of sunbeds to be 3 meters.
  • In the free part of the beach from sunbeds, it is recommended, that the ratio should be about 10 square meters per bather (child or adult).
  • It is recommended to use a wooden or plastic sunbed.
  • After the release of each set of “permanent” mounted sunbeds, it is recommended, to disinfect the entire set (with 60% to 70% isopropyl alcohol solution) by a properly trained person and not to approach new visitors for at least 20 minutes.
  • It is recommended that the hotel unit could cooperate with a specialized call center / telemedicine system to deal with or to rout, any issue related to the Corona virus Covid-19.

For public organized beaches by municipalities or municipal companies, some of the overall proposals are indicated:

  • It is recommended that the distance between each “permanent” mounted umbrella set and pair of sunbeds to be 3 meters.
  • In the free part of the beach from sunbeds, it is recommended, that the ratio should be about 10 square meters per bather (child or adult).
  • It is recommended to use a wooden or plastic sunbed.
  • After the release of each set of “permanent” mounted sunbeds, it is recommended, to disinfect the entire set (with 60% to 70% isopropyl alcohol solution) by a properly trained person and not to approach new visitors for at least 20 minutes.
  • It is recommended that shared showers be at least 15 meters away from the nearest bathers.

For public non organized beaches, some of the overall proposals are indicated:

  • Throughout the entire beach, the ratio should be about 10 square meters per bather (child or adult).
  • It is recommended to avoid any kind of transaction with street vendors within the beach.
  • It is recommended to avoid closed shared showers.
  • It is recommended not to use shared locker rooms.
  • It is recommended that shared showers should be at least 15 meters away from the nearest swimmers.

All of the above recommendations and suggestions are subject to revision, when there are new data concerning Corona virus Covid-19, from the World Health Organization.

The proposals for the operation of the beaches according to the new data created by the pandemic by Corona Virus Covid-19, were compiled with the help:

  • Of Dr. Loubounis Emmanouil, Doctor of Public Health, Public Health Directorate of the Region of Crete.
  • Of Cretan Medicare – Medical Care of Crete.
