Costa Nostrum Leads the Way in Sustainable Beach Management Across 6 European Nations

The summer of 2025 finds Costa Nostrum implementing its award-winning private protocol for the sustainable management of beaches in six European countries, as part of the European Horizon Project PRO-COAST (HORIZON-CL6-2022-BIODIV-01).

The implementation of the certification protocol involves the collection of both field and historical data, in order to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each study area. So far, under the framework of the European program, the Costa Nostrum certification protocol has been applied in six countries, with plans for expansion to three more.

The goal of this award-winning protocol is the sustainable management of coastal zones, enabling harmonious coexistence between local stakeholders and end users within a framework that protects, conserves, and highlights marine and coastal biodiversity, particularly in environmentally sensitive areas.

The countries in which the Costa Nostrum – Sustainable Beaches protocol has already been applied are:

  • Norway, specifically on a beach near the city of Bergen, in the lush northwest region, surrounded by green plains and lakes.
  • Malta, on the highly popular and touristic island of Comino, known for its turquoise waters and endemic terrestrial species.
  • Estonia, on a long sandy coastline near the capital city of Tallinn, amidst a beautiful green landscape.
  • Romania, on the shores of the historic city of Constanța, a major tourist destination in Central and Eastern Europe.
  • England, on the southern coast near the seaside town of Bournemouth, a highly visited area during the summer months.
  • Ireland, on an impressive beach influenced by the phenomenon of tides, located in the northwestern part of the country, along the coastal zone of Sligo.

The next destinations where the Costa Nostrum – Sustainable Beaches protocol is expected to be implemented by the end of summer 2025 include Montenegro, Italy, and Slovenia.
